Introduction

Within this session we discussed what types of technology/ equipment is required for our individual project type, and what the different key things would be required and why they would be required and how they would be useful.

Unreal engine

To be a 3D designer the most important thing for you is to have a computer and not just any computer, because you will need to have a specific type of specs for your computer in order to run the programs needed to create the 3D models and environments.

I will need Unreal engine to make my object “come to life” more than they will within 3ds max. Unreal engine will help me out because it allows me to observe my objects in a different light where I can see what they would look like as if they was in a game.

These are the specs that are needed to have to support Unreal engine and 3DS max

Operating System Windows 7/8 64-bit
Processor Quad-core Intel or AMD, 2.5 GHz or faster
Memory 8 GB RAM
Video Card/DirectX Version DirectX 11 compatible graphics card

3DS MAX/ Computer

This is the specs that are required for 3DS max both Software and hardware

Software
Operating System Microsoft® Windows® 7 (SP1), Windows® 8 and Windows® 8.1 Professional operating system
Browser Autodesk recommends the latest version of the following web browsers for access to online supplemental content:

  • Apple® Safari® web browser
  • Google Chrome™ web browser
  • Microsoft® Internet Explorer® web browser
  • Mozilla® Firefox® web browser
Hardware
CPU 64-bit Intel® or AMD® multi-core processor
Graphics Hardware Refer to the Recommended Hardware wizard for a detailed list of recommended systems and graphics cards
RAM 4 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended)
Disk Space 4.5 GB of free disk space for install
Pointing Device Three-button mouse

I need this because it is going to be able to make it easy to create the 3D models although I could use Blender that is different to what 3Ds max is that blender is free where as 3Ds max isn’t. It is going to help me out by allowing me to create 3D models for my 3D space and it allows me to be free with my designs by not having completely set shapes.

Computer specs can vary from different levels this is because it depends on the graphics of the assets you are thinking of creating, if you are going to create a particular styled art for your assets then they can have lower polliies but if they are realistic then a higher spec PC.

Photoshop

Photoshop is another software that I need in order to add textures to my 3D models to make them see more realistic to the eye – depending on the over all style I’m going for – However, there are some programs that are free which can help me in the long front i.e. if I was an indie company.

Specs to run Photoshop:

  • Intel® Core 2 or AMD Athlon® 64 processor; 2 GHz or faster processor
  • Microsoft Windows 7 with Service Pack 1, Windows 8.1, or Windows 10
  • 2 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended)
  • 2 GB of available hard-disk space for 32-bit installation; 2.1 GB of available hard-disk space for 64-bit installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on removable flash storage devices)
  • 1024 x 768 display (1280×800 recommended) with 16-bit color and 512 MB of VRAM (1 GB recommended)*
  • OpenGL 2.0–capable system
  • Internet connection and registration are necessary for required software activation, validation of subscriptions, and access to online services.**

Concept artist

Drawing utensils – Drawing utensils are so that the artists can start drawing although some artist can draw without using these and only use computers to create their work by using a drawing tablet. You need drawing utensils because it can help you get started with jotting down base ideas as well as notes and it will be very helpful because it is a portable equipment – you can take it virtually anywhere at anytime – making it easier to draw on the go.

Photoshop “same as 3D modeling”

Drawing tablet – A drawing tablet is an accessory that helps the artist draw on computers, this could be helpful for adding more details as well as creating many different shades and brushes some of which you may not have with you.

Evaluation

I have discovered the different types of specs that I will need in order to run certain programs on a computer. This is going to help me when creating my final major project by allowing me to find what I need my computer to be in order to create what I’d like to create for my FMP.

As well as this I found out what the other peaces of equipment that I will help with the different jobs within my projects.
